2012 Rwenzori alpine blaze marks first major fire in 12,000 years

Lake sediment analysis shows the 2012 wildfire that burned about 42 sq km of the Rwenzori alpine zone was the first large-scale fire recorded in the region for at least 12,000 years.

A study published in Nature reconstructed fire history in Africa's Rwenzori Mountains by analyzing sediment cores from two high-altitude lakes. The core from Lake Kopello, situated at about 13,000 feet, showed an almost complete absence of major fires over the past 12,000 years, until a dramatic charcoal increase linked to the 2012 wildfire, which burned roughly 42 sq km of alpine moorland. Scientists attribute this unprecedented event to a combination of climate warming and expanding human influence, echoing recent fires on Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro.

In contrast, the lower-elevation Lake Mahoma core recorded regular charcoal deposits beginning around 2,000 years ago, coinciding with archaeological signs of intensified human activity and resulting shifts in vegetation. The 2012 blaze also triggered downstream flooding, highlighting the vulnerability of the region's unique Afroalpine ecosystems. Researchers warn that preventing future ignitions should become a conservation priority as warming continues to reshape high-elevation landscapes.
