49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan cleared to lead preseason opener after crash recovery

Kyle Shanahan said he is nearly fully healed from a July 14 car accident and will coach the 49ers' exhibition game on Thursday.

San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan announced that he is close to full recovery after a July 14 collision that caused a concussion, broken ribs, a broken nose, a broken hand and a cut over his eye requiring more than 40 stitches. In his first training-camp press conference, he said only minor headaches and fatigue remain and that he feels ready to coach the team's exhibition game against the Tennessee Titans on Thursday.

Shanahan has been attending daily practices, focusing on film analysis and selective team meetings while his assistants, including Chris Foerster, Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris and Brant Boyer, have handled other responsibilities. He noted that the loud music that initially bothered him is no longer an issue and that the team’s “well-oiled machine” makes his limited involvement manageable. The 49ers will also hold joint practices with the Titans and later the Chargers before concluding the preseason on Aug. 27 and traveling to Australia for their season opener on Sept. 11.

Why it matters

Fans and the team need to know the head coach will be present for the upcoming preseason game after a serious accident.
