ACT committee urges probe into CIT CEO over alleged misconduct and obstruction
A legislative committee in the ACT has recommended that the Public Sector Standards Commissioner investigate CIT chief Margot McNeill for conduct deemed inconsistent with public-service values.
An ACT Legislative Assembly committee investigated claims that Canberra Institute of Technology CEO Margot McNeill supplied false or misleading testimony regarding her appointment. The probe stalled because McNeill repeatedly declined to share legal advice or documents, invoking professional privilege, while TAFE NSW also withheld information that could confirm its media statements. The committee characterized her tactics as “overly litigious and combative,” suggesting they conflict with public-sector standards and could damage the reputation of the service.
Consequently, it recommended that the Public Sector Standards Commissioner, currently Andrew Metcalfe, examine whether her actions breach the Public Sector Management Act and Code of Conduct. McNeill remains on leave, and independent MLA Thomas Emerson said the findings deepen concerns about her tenure. Both McNeill’s legal team and CIT were asked for comment.
