AI-driven startup Discovered Materials raises $9 million to hunt cooler chip compounds
Discovered Materials, a Y Combinator alum, secured a $9 million seed round to use AI agents for finding new semiconductor materials that reduce heat.
Data-center chips generate excessive heat, prompting Discovered Materials to apply generative AI to the materials problem. After emerging from Y Combinator, the firm closed a $9 million seed round led by Lightspeed India Partners, with participation from Peak XV Partners and angels including Paul Graham, Gokul Rajaram and Thariq Shihipar. Co-founders Advaith Sridhar and Akash Ramdas built a pipeline that leverages Anthropic models to suggest new compounds, then validates them with custom physics simulations, increasing daily guesses from a few dozen to thousands.
The company released a catalog of hundreds of candidate materials and a "Material Discovery Bench" to track AI performance. While several discovered substances match existing chipmaker materials, commercial use hinges on manufacturability and electrical properties, a challenge the founders acknowledge will require wet-lab work and possible patents on GPU applications.
