AI-Driven Startup Raises $25M to Build Factories Run Entirely by Software

Foundational Industries secured a $25 million seed round to develop factories where artificial intelligence controls every production step, rather than adding robots to existing lines.

Foundational Industries announced a $25 million seed investment, spearheaded by BoxGroup and Zigg Ventures and joined by Abstract Ventures, Adverb Ventures, Buckley Ventures and Offline Ventures. CEO Jonathan Winer, who spent 25 years at Alphabet’s Sidewalk Infrastructure Partners, explained that the capital will fund a minimum viable product rather than a large-scale plant; the company has already built a virtual factory using software emulators.

Its first market will be data-center developers, neoclouds and chipmakers needing custom rack enclosures for new AI silicon. Winer contends that U.S. manufacturing strategy should avoid trying to match China’s trillion-dollar, state-backed automation push and instead focus on AI-native factories that can instantly generate bills of materials and production processes. He believes America’s edge lies in advanced AI research and abundant compute, which can produce cheaper, faster factories and give the country a competitive advantage.

Why it matters

The venture could reshape how U.S. factories are built, offering a new competitive path against China’s advanced manufacturing model.
