AI will reward knowledge sharers, says veteran ad executive Martin Sorrell

Martin Sorrell argues that AI will flatten corporate hierarchies, making those who share information the new power holders while automating many marketing tasks.

In a recent interview, Sir Martin Sorrell, founder of S4 Capital and former longest-serving FTSE 100 CEO, asserted that the key skill for the AI era is the willingness to share knowledge, which will overturn traditional power bases built on information hoarding. He described AI as a democratising force that levels organisations, making those who disseminate data the "real kings and queens." While OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has suggested that 95 % of marketing roles could be replaced by AI, Sorrell believes only a portion will disappear but that efficiency gains will force agencies to abandon costly, manual campaign models.

He likened the advertising sector to asset management, where automated workflows are already standard, and warned that the largely manual work of 250,000 media planners cannot survive in a hyperscaler-driven world. Citing one outlet/Ipsos poll showing public anxiety about AI-related job loss, he urged a positive view of AI’s zero-marginal-cost information. He also reflected on the pandemic-induced shift to distributed work, noting challenges in managing remote Gen Z staff, and echoed Keynes’s vision of a future with dramatically shorter workweeks enabled by AI.
