Air Marshal Awadesh Kumar Bharti retires after leading Operation Sindoor

Air Marshal Awadesh Kumar Bharti concluded a 39-year tenure in the Indian Air Force, stepping down after serving as Deputy Chief of the Air Staff. Commissioned in 1987, he quickly distinguished himself as a top-tier fighter pilot and later commanded the Su-30MKI fleet during its early integration, earning the Vayu Sena Medal for squadron achievements in joint exercises with the RAF and French Air Force. His most notable role was as Director General Air Operations during Operation Sindoor, where the IAF conducted precision strikes on Pakistani air bases, radar sites and defence assets in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack, a campaign that earned him the Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal.

Bharti also held senior posts at Air Headquarters, Strategic Forces Command, Eastern Air Command, and Central Air Command, and led the 2 Wing in Pune. A graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, the 70th NDA Course and the 139th Pilot Course, his retirement marks the end of a career that shaped modern IAF doctrine and tactical practice.
