Akron football offers season ticket holder chance to design opening offensive play

The University of Akron will let a season-ticket holder help script the first offensive series for its home opener against Robert Morris.

The University of Akron's football program is launching a promotion that gives a loyal season-ticket holder a seat at the coaching table for its September 12 home opener versus Robert Morris. The selected fan, titled "Offensive Coordinator of the Game," will collaborate with head coach Joe Moorhead to craft the opening offensive series during a private meeting the week of the game. All season-ticket holders are automatically entered, and they can earn additional entries by recruiting new ticket buyers.

A random drawing scheduled for August 19 will determine the winner. One outlet Director Andrew Goodrich said the initiative is designed to deepen fan engagement, while Moorhead expressed excitement about the unprecedented behind-the-scenes experience. The contest follows Akron's road game against Wake Forest earlier in the season.

Why it matters

It shows how college teams are using novel fan-engagement tactics to boost attendance and loyalty.
