Algerian officials confirmed on Saturday that a German citizen kidnapped in Niger about two weeks ago has been rescued by the Algerian army's security services. The individual was taken into custody on Friday and flown from the remote town of Guezzam to the Boufarik military base close to the capital, Algiers. Authorities stated he is in good health and will be transferred to German officials at a future date.
A spokesperson for Germany's foreign ministry acknowledged the incident but said the government would not comment further. The abduction took place against a backdrop of persistent violence in Niger, which has been governed by a military junta since a July 2023 coup and is plagued by attacks from al-Qaeda and Islamic State affiliates.
