Alternative-fuel cars near parity with petrol models in Indian market

In July, alternative-fuel passenger vehicles captured 40.6% of Indian sales, closing in on petrol's 41.7% share, according to FADA data.

July saw Indian passenger-vehicle retail volumes climb 19% year-on-year, reaching 4.1 lakh units and breaking the four-lakh mark for the first time. The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations reported that vehicles powered by CNG, hybrid systems or electricity made up 40.6% of sales, trailing petrol-powered cars by only 1.1 percentage points (41.7%). This represents a sharp contraction of the gap that stood at 13.2 points a year ago.

The surge in alternative-fuel uptake is attributed to fresh model introductions, price benefits following recent GST adjustments and growing buyer interest in cheaper running costs. Additionally, lingering doubts about the transition to E20 fuel have nudged some consumers toward CNG, hybrid and electric options. The trend signals a rapid shift in Indian consumer preferences toward greener propulsion technologies.

Why it matters

The shift shows Indian buyers are rapidly adopting greener vehicles, reshaping the auto market and emissions outlook.
