Amber and yellow heat alerts issued across much of England as temperatures near 34°C

The UK Health Security Agency has activated amber heat health alerts for London, the South East, the East of England and the East Midlands, running from Monday morning until Wednesday 5 August, and yellow alerts for the North West, Yorkshire and the Humber, the West Midlands and the South West for the same period. Officials caution that the high temperatures could place significant pressure on health and social care systems and raise death rates, especially among vulnerable populations.

The North East is the sole English region not covered by any alert. Forecasts call for a hot air mass moving north from France, delivering temperatures as high as 34 °C in parts of London and the Home Counties, with much of the Midlands, East Anglia and southern England reaching around 30 °C. Rain is expected to affect northern and western Britain, bringing heavy showers to Scotland and Northern Ireland, while most of southern England stays dry and humid, though isolated thunderstorms may develop. A weak cold front later in the week should bring cooler one outlet air, ending the brief heat spell, though drought conditions are likely to persist in the south throughout August.
