AMD claims open-source strategy gives it edge over Nvidia in AI chips

AMD emphasized that its ROCm open-source framework is a key differentiator in the race for AI hardware, allowing the firm to tap a global community of developers without licensing fees. CEO Lisa Su noted a tenfold increase in open-source contributions over the past year, describing the moment as an "inflection point." Executives Kirk Saban and Salil Raje said the model lets AMD quickly improve software and gives its AI chips an advantage over Nvidia’s proprietary CUDA ecosystem.

The company reported $11.5 billion in revenue, surpassing analyst expectations, though its shares slipped 9% in after-hours trading. Capital spending rose sharply to $808 million, reflecting heightened demand for AI compute. AMD’s stock has risen roughly 193% over the past year, outpacing Nvidia’s 20% gain.
