American Airlines tightens its 24-hour ticket refund rules
American Airlines has revised its cancellation policy, limiting full refunds to tickets booked at least a week before departure and cancelled within 24 hours.
Effective Wednesday, American Airlines altered its refund policy so that a full reimbursement is granted only when a ticket is purchased at least seven days before the scheduled departure and cancelled within 24 hours. Previously, customers could receive refunds for tickets booked at least two days ahead. The airline still allows a free 24-hour hold on reservations and maintains the refund option for the newly defined early-booking segment.
This adjustment brings American in line with the policies of JetBlue, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines, whereas Delta Air Lines continues to provide refunds without the week-ahead condition. The Department of Transportation requires airlines to offer the 24-hour refund for flights departing a week or more after purchase, but it does not compel carriers to extend the benefit to nearer-term flights. American stated the revision complies with federal rules while giving travelers a clear hold option.
