Anthony Michael Hall Says John Hughes Mused About a Breakfast Club Sequel Before His Death

Actor Anthony Michael Hall recalled that director John Hughes discussed a possible Breakfast Club sequel during their last phone call, which also featured John Candy.

During a broadcast appearance, Anthony Michael Hall disclosed that his last telephone conversation with John Hughes also involved John Candy. In that call, Hughes floated the idea of a Breakfast Club sequel that would bring the original five teens together later in life, now working adults in their thirties. Hall admitted he does not know if Hughes ever wrote a script or if it remained a casual brainstorm.

He also recalled Hughes spontaneously proposing a different story while they were filming The Breakfast Club, a concept that evolved into the 1985 movie Weird Science starring Hall, Robert Downey Jr., and Bill Paxton. Hughes, whose filmography includes Pretty in Pink and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, died of a sudden heart attack at age 59 in 2009. The original Breakfast Club was a box-office hit, earning $51.5 million worldwide and spawning a chart-topping soundtrack. Hall’s comments highlight Hughes’s prolific creativity and the lingering curiosity about a potential sequel.
