Arctic Temperatures Surge Above 90°F, Matching Subtropical Heat
Temperatures in northern Russia have climbed past 90°F this week, setting unprecedented heat records for the Arctic region.
This week, the Arctic sector of northern Russia experienced temperatures exceeding 90°F, with Selagoncy reaching 93.0°F and Olenyok recording 90.9°F, based on Ogimet data cited by climatologist Maximiliano Herrera. Alan Gerard, an independent meteorologist, explained that rapid Arctic warming—amplified by diminishing sea ice and a potent El Niño—has created a feedback loop that intensifies regional heat. He noted that the Arctic is warming up to four times faster than the rest of the planet, making such record highs increasingly likely.
The temperatures are comparable to those in subtropical locales such as Orlando, Florida. Gerard also cautioned that a strong El Niño this year could lead to even higher records by 2027. Similar extreme heat has recently been observed across the United States, including a 100°F reading in New York's Central Park and temperatures above 110°F in parts of Montana.
