Bakamumu Marika, senior leader of the Rirratjingu clan in Arnhem Land, has died, the Rirratjingu Aboriginal Corporation announced.
The Rirratjingu Aboriginal Corporation has reported the passing of Bakamumu Marika, a senior figure of the Rirratjingu clan in Arnhem Land. Marika, honored as a Member of the Order of Australia in 2022, served as the clan's founder, long-time chairman and current patron. He was widely recognized for championing land-rights issues and preserving Yolŋu culture while promoting education, community projects and economic opportunities.
The corporation described his leadership as rooted in traditional values that strengthened the community and inspired younger members. In a statement, they pledged to uphold his legacy and follow his call for unity, love and resilience among the Rirratjingu people.
