Asian confederation joins UEFA and CONCACAF in opposing FIFA's investment plan

The Asian Football Confederation has publicly rejected FIFA's proposal to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors, aligning with UEFA and CONCACAF.

The Asian Football Confederation announced its opposition to FIFA's initiative to create a commercial vehicle that would sell World Cup stakes to private investors, joining similar objections from UEFA and CONCACAF. In its statement, the AFC said the plan jeopardises the World Cup’s universal character and could even spark boycott discussions. It highlighted perceived shortcomings in FIFA’s consultation and decision-making framework, arguing that such a significant proposal must involve meaningful engagement with all confederations and FIFA’s statutory bodies.

The AFC urged an immediate governance review to restore confidence and ensure future decisions are made transparently. The organization warned that without broad consensus, the initiative cannot succeed and may undermine the authority of FIFA’s governing structures.

Why it matters

The rejection could stall FIFA's commercial reforms and affect future World Cup financing.
