Asteroid Mining Could Supply Metals and Fuel for Future Mars Colonies

A new study suggests that certain metal-rich asteroids are reachable with existing spacecraft and could provide building materials and propellant for a Mars settlement.

A team of scientists from EPFL in Switzerland used computer simulations to evaluate whether asteroid mining could support a permanent human presence on Mars. By testing thousands of route combinations, they identified specific M-type asteroids rich in iron and nickel that are within reach of present-day spacecraft. Their models also incorporated carbonaceous asteroids that contain water ice and carbon, which could be processed into rocket propellant in space, lessening the amount of fuel that must be carried from Earth.

The study emphasizes that successful implementation hinges on careful target selection, as the energy cost of an ill-chosen asteroid could outweigh the value of the retrieved metals. Although actual space mining remains far off, the research provides a proof-of-concept for a supply chain that could deliver essential metals and fuel to a growing Mars colony. This logistical framework could be a key factor in making interplanetary settlement feasible.
