Astronomers Spot a Dormant Supermassive Black Hole Far From Its Galaxy’s Core
A dormant supermassive black hole was discovered 30,000 light-years from the center of its host galaxy after it ripped apart a passing star, producing a bright flare.
A team from the University of Maryland has reported the detection of a quiescent supermassive black hole situated about 30,000 light-years from the centre of its galaxy, marking the inaugural discovery of an inactive black hole so far from a galactic core. The black hole became visible only after it shredded a nearby star, creating a short-lived but luminous tidal disruption event. Researchers employed an artificial-intelligence algorithm applied to data from the Zwicky Transient Facility, which scans the northern sky every two days, to spot the distinctive flare.
Lead author Robert David Stein described the rapid identification, which occurred within three months of launching the AI system. The object's unusual position may stem from a past galactic collision that stripped away its host galaxy or from a chaotic three-black-hole encounter that ejected it outward. Future surveys with the Vera C. Rubin Observatory and the Lowell Discovery Telescope are expected to uncover many more wandering black holes, expanding understanding of galaxy evolution.
