Attorney General urges congressional impeachment probe of former SPLC lawyer

Attorney General James Uthmeier wrote to key members of Congress on Monday, urging an impeachment inquiry into Judge Nancy Abudu. Abudu, a current 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals judge, previously held the position of director of strategic litigation at the Southern Poverty Law Center. During her tenure, a grand jury indictment alleged that the SPLC operated a covert program that directed donor funds to extremist organizations, including the Ku Klux Klan.

Uthmeier contends that it is implausible for a senior legal officer like Abudu to have been unaware of such alleged criminal activity. The letter was sent to Speaker Mike Johnson and the chairs of the Senate Judiciary Committee, the House Judiciary Committee, and the House Oversight Committee, seeking a formal investigation into whether Abudu’s actions merit impeachment and removal from the bench.
