Audi plans four major R26 upgrade packages for the second half of 2026

Audi entered Formula 1 as a full factory team in 2026, inheriting the Sauber operation and facing a steep learning curve. Following the early departure of team principal Jonathan Wheatley and the appointment of Mattia Binotto to run day-to-day affairs, the squad is now targeting an aggressive development push. According to reports, four separate upgrade packages are slated for the R26, and three of them are projected to deliver tangible lap-time benefits.

The team already spent one of its two FIA-issued engine tokens at Barcelona, boosting Nico Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto’s low-speed performance, while opting to reserve the second token for 2027. With the power unit essentially locked for the rest of the season, all remaining performance gains must come from chassis work, prompting Audi to allocate wind-tunnel and manufacturing resources to this multi-phase plan in hopes of climbing the midfield standings.
