Australia blends satellite tech and Indigenous fire wisdom to curb wildfires

Professor Marta Yebra leads a project that merges satellite-derived fuel-moisture data with traditional Indigenous fire knowledge to improve fire detection and management in Australia.

At the Bushfire Research Centre of Excellence, Professor Marta Yebra is integrating high-resolution satellite data that measures landscape fuel-moisture with centuries-old Indigenous fire practices. Working alongside Indigenous fire manager Adrian Webster, the project validates satellite alerts by cross-checking plant colour, scent and soil conditions observed on the ground. Their findings reveal a striking correlation, underscoring the value of combining Western science with traditional ecological knowledge.

The initiative also advocates for cultural burning and large-scale prescribed burns to break up fuel accumulation, strategies that are being considered in Europe and Canada. Drone technology and back-burning tactics are further modern tools highlighted by fire officials such as Trent Curtin and Damian Hatfield. With an anticipated strong El Niño season, Yebra’s team is seeking additional funding and co-design partnerships with Indigenous groups to safeguard vulnerable regions.
