Australian middle-distance star Natasha Ward passes away at 21

Natasha Ward, a 21-year-old Australian middle-distance runner, was reported dead by New South Wales Athletics and the Sutherland District Athletics Club. The statement highlighted her early success, including a 1500 m medal at the NSW All Schools competition and senior accolades such as a 1500 m medal at the 2023 UniSport Nationals and an 800 m bronze earlier this year. Ward also raced at the 2024 Australian Championships and regularly participated in both summer and winter relays for her club.

While officials have not disclosed the cause of death, tributes emphasized her kindness, magnetic smile, and the inspiration she provided to teammates. A fan recalled her helpfulness at a Nike store in Birkenhead just weeks before she died. Ward was studying exercise and sports science at Macquarie University in Sydney. Her death comes shortly after Australian sprinter Jemma Stapleton was killed in a motorbike accident in Thailand.
