Bangladesh PM urges India to create supportive climate as he seeks Hasina’s extradition

Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman told India's newly appointed high commissioner Dinesh Trivedi that a “conducive environment” is essential for strengthening ties between the neighbours. The appeal came as Rahman's six-month-old administration seeks New Delhi’s cooperation in extraditing former premier Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India after being deposed in August 2024 and has since been sentenced to death. Dhaka’s foreign ministry denounced India’s decision to let Hasina address an online conference, describing it as deeply hurtful.

India said it is examining the extradition request according to its legal procedures. The Indian High Commission highlighted its commitment to a positive and forward-looking partnership. Meanwhile, Hasina, speaking virtually from Delhi, reiterated plans to return in December and accused the interim government of protecting perpetrators of 2024 violence.

Her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy questioned the indemnity law shielding protesters from prosecution. The exchange underscores lingering tensions and the diplomatic balancing act between the two countries.
