Bangladesh weighs Modi's invitation for Tarique Rahman to attend BRICS summit

Bangladesh’s foreign minister Khalilur Rahman announced that the administration is reviewing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s invitation to Tarique Rahman for a trip to India ahead of the 18th BRICS summit in New Delhi, adding that the prime minister’s schedule also includes the UN General Assembly in New York. The statement came after Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi, newly arrived in Dhaka, paid a courtesy call and emphasized India’s commitment to a constructive partnership with Bangladesh.

Trivedi met state minister for foreign affairs Shama Obaed Islam to discuss expanding cooperation across sectors and expressed eagerness to host the Bangladeshi prime minister soon. Rahman acknowledged existing “irritants” in the bilateral relationship that need resolution and said all issues, including the pending extradition request for former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, will be addressed in future talks. The invitation, first extended in February and refreshed last week, remains pending as Dhaka balances multiple diplomatic commitments.
