The delayed Virginia Senate race has finally taken shape as former Major General Bert Mizusawa clinched the Republican nomination, positioning him against long-time Democratic Senator Mark Warner. Warner, a powerful figure on the Senate Intelligence Committee, is running for his fourth term after winning his last election by about a 12-point margin. Mizusawa, who previously pursued House and Senate seats without success, was once a foreign-policy adviser to Donald Trump and later served as a senior advisor at the CIA.

His campaign emphasizes reducing the national debt, improving affordability, and supporting the military. The contest also features independent Mark Moran, an investment banker and ex-reality-TV participant who earlier abandoned a Democratic bid and attracted attention for betting on his own campaign via the prediction market Kalshi. All three Republican contenders lack prior elected experience but have backgrounds in government, intelligence, or the armed forces.
