Beta Technologies unveils autonomous hybrid-electric MV250 cargo drone at Farnborough

Beta Technologies displayed its MV250, a pilot-less hybrid-electric aircraft capable of vertical take-off and a one-ton payload, at the Farnborough Airshow.

At the July Farnborough Airshow, Beta Technologies introduced the MV250, an autonomous hybrid-electric cargo platform designed for high-risk battlefield logistics. Building on its civilian eVTOL experience and a recent NATO exercise with its all-electric ALIA aircraft in Sweden, the MV250 can vertically lift, fly without an onboard pilot and transport up to a ton of equipment, medical kits or munitions over a 250-nautical-mile tactical range.

Power comes from a GE Aerospace turbogenerator that feeds electric motors, while a bonded-composite fuselage allows production in hours rather than months. The design omits gearboxes, hydraulics and moving rotors, reducing maintenance burdens. Beta’s board member, former US Army chief of staff Jim McConville, highlighted the need for commanders to reach dangerous zones without risking personnel. The firm expects military demand for vertical-lift capability to outpace the civilian air-taxi market.
