Bill Simmons argues New Orleans should lose its NBA franchise

Bill Simmons used his recent podcast appearance to call for the NBA to take the New Orleans Pelicans out of the league, arguing the market has consistently failed to sustain a successful franchise. He contrasted this with Portland, where he remains supportive despite owner Tom Dundon's complaints. Simmons highlighted that New Orleans has hosted three separate NBA teams—the Jazz, the Hornets, and the Pelicans—yet none have ever advanced to a conference final.

He suggested the city’s limited fan base and lack of a deep basketball tradition make it unsuitable for an NBA franchise. By contrast, he praised Memphis for proving that a small market can thrive, and he did not advocate moving that team. Simmons concluded that if any city should lose a team to make room for expansion, New Orleans is the most logical choice.
