BJP disavows controversial slogans targeting women at Article 370 anniversary event
The BJP said the anti-women chants shouted by some of its workers during the Article 370 anniversary celebrations do not reflect the party’s stance.
At a rally in Anantnag marking the seventh year since Article 370 was revoked, BJP supporters changed a historic National Conference chant to a version that mocked the names of two women, prompting accusations of misogyny on social media. The party’s organization secretary Ashok Koul responded by reaffirming the BJP’s dedication to women’s dignity and highlighting the 33 % reservation for women as evidence of that commitment.
Party spokesperson Altaf Thakur clarified that any offensive slogans were the personal views of individuals and not endorsed by the BJP leadership. National Conference spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq condemned the alteration, saying it crossed a line by turning respected female symbols into a joke. PDP spokesperson Syed Tajamul Islam echoed the criticism, stressing that such insults should never be directed at the symbolic representation of mothers and sisters in Kashmir.
Why it matters
The incident highlights political tensions in Kashmir and raises concerns about gender-sensitive rhetoric in Indian politics.
