Blood test detecting Alzheimer's markers approved for upcoming clinical trials
Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration has cleared the pTau217 blood test for clinical trials, promising detection of Alzheimer's signs decades before symptoms appear.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration has given the green light to the pTau217 blood test, enabling it to move into clinical trials within months. This assay detects phosphorylated tau 217, a biomarker linked to amyloid plaque buildup, and can return results in about 18 minutes, potentially identifying Alzheimer's risk decades early. The approval was announced at the opening of the Asia-Pacific Centre of Excellence for Alzheimer's Disease Diagnosis in Sydney, a joint effort by Neuroscience Research Australia and Roche Diagnostics Australia.
NeuRA's chief executive Matthew Kiernan highlighted the test's role in easing delayed diagnoses, while Roche's Anand Vairavan called it a "gift of time" compared with costly imaging and invasive procedures. Federal Health Minister Mark Butler and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised the development as a major advance against a disease that caused over 17,500 deaths in 2024 and costs Australia billions annually.
