Boosting Homeownership Remains Crucial for the American Dream

Marking America’s 250th birthday, the president of the National Association of REALTORS® reflects on the symbolic moment when new homeowners receive their keys, emphasizing its link to the American Dream. He points out that today’s buyers face higher rates, a sharp drop in available homes and stricter regulations, pushing the average first-time buyer’s age to a record 40. Citing a national poll, he notes that 85% of voters still view homeownership as central to the Dream, underscoring its role in building intergenerational wealth.

While welcoming the passage of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, he calls for additional measures to improve financing options, increase supply, curb rising insurance costs and reform rent-control and tax policies. He argues that each home sale generates significant local economic activity and jobs, making broader access to housing a catalyst for national prosperity.
