Brother of Karachi gangster Uzair Baloch critically injured in Lyari drive-by attack

Zubair Baloch, sibling of imprisoned gang leader Uzair Baloch, was gravely wounded after gunmen opened fire on him outside his home in Lyari, Karachi.

Zubair Baloch, the brother of jailed Karachi gangster Uzair Baloch, suffered life-threatening wounds when two masked gunmen on a motorcycle sprayed his Singu Lane residence with bullets on Thursday evening. The attack struck him in the chest and abdomen, and he was rushed to Civil Hospital Karachi for emergency surgery. Two bystanders were caught in the crossfire, with one reported to be in serious condition.

Police investigators, citing a shopkeeper who returned fire, are reviewing CCTV footage that shows the chaos and are probing whether the shooting stems from personal enmity or a revival of long-standing Lyari gang wars. Uzair Baloch, still serving a 12-year sentence handed down by a military court, rose to prominence after the death of his cousin, notorious figure Sardar Abdul Rehman Baloch, in 2009. The Lyari neighbourhood has a history of violent turf battles involving groups like the Peoples’ Aman Committee.

Why it matters

The shooting highlights ongoing gang violence in Karachi and raises concerns about public safety in a historically volatile neighbourhood.
