Caden Sorrell belts first professional homer as Pelicans split doubleheader

In a two-game series, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans lost the first contest 6-5 to the Columbia Fireflies but rebounded with a 14-3 win in the second. Center fielder Caden Sorrell launched his first professional home run to start the night, finishing 2-for-4 with a walk, two RBI and two runs scored. Luke Alwood, the Pelicans' tenth-round draft pick, made his pro debut and secured the win by striking out five batters over two innings.

Derniche Valdez added his eighth homer of the year, and Ivan Cespedes contributed a two-run blast, his eighth of the season. The Pelicans' offense was bolstered by solid outings from pitchers Noah Edders and David Avitia, despite Avitia's early exit in game one.
