Calgary community gathers at Municipal Plaza to honor missing boy Parker

A vigil for 11-year-old Parker, who vanished in July and was later found dead, will be held at Calgary’s Municipal Plaza from 7 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

Calgary’s Municipal Plaza outside City Hall is set to hold a community vigil for Parker, the 11-year-old autistic boy who went missing on July 16 and whose remains were confirmed last week. The ceremony, scheduled between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Wednesday, aims to honor his life and reflect on the city-wide effort that mobilized thousands of police officers, search specialists and volunteers over nearly two weeks. Ward 4 Councillor DJ Kelly, representing the area where Parker lived, is coordinating the gathering and emphasized its role in allowing residents to grieve together.

He noted that while other smaller vigils have occurred, the plaza venue will enable a larger number of Calgarians to participate in a moment of shared healing. Kelly described the search’s conclusion as providing “the wrong type of closure,” underscoring the lingering pain felt by many. The event is positioned as an opportunity for the community to come together after the tragic outcome.
