California AG Bonta vows victory in lawsuit over abortion-pill reversal claims

California’s attorney general, Rob Bonta, maintains that the state will prevail in its lawsuit against Heartbeat International and RealOptions, which he says falsely marketed a high-dose progesterone protocol as a way to undo the effects of the abortion pill mifepristone. The suit, filed in 2023, claims the groups failed to disclose risks such as severe bleeding. After six weeks of testimony in Alameda County Superior Court, both sides have finished presenting evidence, and closing arguments are set for September 17.

Bonta expressed confidence that the judge will rule in California’s favor, while the defendants, aided by the Thomas More Society’s Joe Barnas, contend that the science behind reversal remains unresolved and question the impartiality of the state’s expert. A judge’s decision is expected within 90 days of the closing arguments. The case follows a reported instance where a woman who regretted an abortion used the group’s resources and later gave birth to a healthy child.
