California dispensary launches RFID self-checkout for cannabis purchases

Perfect Union Northside dispensary in Sacramento has rolled out an RFID-based self-checkout system, marking the first state-approved use of such technology for cannabis sales. MWG Holdings Group, the parent company, obtained clearance from the Department of Cannabis Control after the system successfully integrated with the dispensary’s payment processor and California’s Metrc tracking system. The new kiosks can read several products at once, reducing checkout time and improving inventory control and security.

MWG Holdings CEO Tom Sheridan said the move reflects rapid maturation in cannabis retail and aims to enhance the customer experience. Regulators continue to monitor the implementation to ensure compliance with existing cannabis regulations. The launch follows a broader trend of cannabis retailers adopting modern retail technologies.
