California motorists hit with hidden fees from DMV-linked online service

Drivers in California are being overcharged by NeedTags.com, a third-party vendor marketed as a DMV partner, and the company threatens legal action against those who dispute the fees.

A growing number of California drivers have turned to NeedTags.com for vehicle registration after the site appears as a sponsored result and a "DMV partner" on the state’s portal. The service adds about $90 to the cost compared with the official DMV site, prompting complaints from users like Allen Jensen and Allyn Peterson, who say the state’s endorsement misleads consumers. An 84-year-old woman from Santa Cruz also reported being trapped by the extra fees and receiving no response from the company.

Consumer advocate Robert Herrell of the Consumer Federation of California warned that the firm’s language falsely suggests parity with government pricing. Google now flags the ads with a disclaimer, but the issue persists as lawmakers have yet to pass a fee-capping bill introduced by Assemblymember Matt Haney. The California DMV advises motorists to use its own website and demands transparency from any third-party partners.

Why it matters

Consumers are paying unnecessary extra fees for a service that the state already provides for free.
