Capybaras Wander Into Mato Grosso Legislative Chamber, Distract Lawmakers

On July 30, the Mato Grosso Legislative Assembly in Cuiabá was briefly interrupted when a troupe of capybaras entered the chamber ahead of a scheduled vote. Video captured by staff member Nayara Bueno shows the animals moving calmly through the doors while personnel attempted to guide them outside. Bueno explained that such visits are common because the legislature borders a park that provides easy access for wildlife.

Authorities reported that the rodents did not harm any property or disrupt the legislative process. The incident underscores the close relationship between the government complex and the surrounding natural environment. Capybaras, the world’s largest rodents, are native to South America and are known for their sociable, laid-back nature, often becoming internet sensations. No injuries or damages were reported.
