Catalans Dragons star Tommy Makinson announces retirement, final game set for September 11

Tommy Makinson, the 34-year-old winger for Catalans Dragons, confirmed via social media that the 2026 campaign will be his final year as a professional rugby league player. The former England international enjoyed a decorated spell with St Helens between 2011 and 2024, collecting five Grand Final titles and a Challenge Cup. After Catalans’ 42-20 defeat to Huddersfield Giants, their playoff hopes dwindled, setting up Makinson’s last appearance against his hometown side, Wigan Warriors, on Friday, 11 September.

In his announcement he reflected on a childhood dream fulfilled, highlighted his gratitude for representing top clubs in England and France, and pledged to savor each remaining match. He vowed to give his all to finish his career on a high note.
