Catholic backing for Trump drops sharply as evangelical support rises

Polling data released by Rolling Out and analyzed by one outlet indicate that Donald Trump’s approval among Catholics fell from 54% in January to 43% in July, while his support among born-again Protestants grew from 56% to 61% in the same period. The most pronounced decline happened between April and May, aligning with a high-profile clash with Pope Leo XIV over the treatment of immigrants and refugees. A Religion Research Institute survey showed 56% of Americans view the pope favorably, compared with only 34% who view Trump favorably.

White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers praised Trump as the greatest president for Christian Americans and accused Democrats of weaponizing the federal government against believers. Analysts warn that the erosion of Catholic support may force Republicans to rebuild nearly ten points of the coalition before the November midterms.
