Champion swimmer Chad le Clos loses home in Cape Town blaze after record Commonwealth feat

After winning his 21st Commonwealth Games medal and surpassing Emma McKeon’s record, Chad le Clos revealed that a fire on the night of July 30 razed his Sea Point residence, where he had lived for over a decade. The blaze spread rapidly through his apartment block, resulting in the death of a 93-year-old neighbour and displacing several other residents. In an Instagram message, le Clos offered heartfelt sympathy to the deceased’s family and highlighted the solidarity of the tight-knit community.

He also called on fellow neighbours to stand together as they recover from the loss of homes and belongings. To assist those impacted, le Clos launched a charitable fundraising campaign. The incident follows his recent successes at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, where he earned three medals, including a historic record-breaking performance.
