Charter operator Third Future Schools assumes control of two Waco elementary campuses

Waco Independent School District entered an $11.7 million partnership with charter group Third Future Schools to manage South Waco and Dean Highland elementary schools, both previously rated failing under the state A-F system. The takeover began this week, bringing a highly regimented daily schedule that includes silent hallway passages, one-minute transitions and additional instructional days. New principals Kimberly McKnight at South Waco and Daniel Speer at Dean Highland were installed, and most teachers hired are local to the Waco-Killeen area.

Parents, such as Laneisha Latimer, attended recent town halls and expressed optimism that the heightened structure will help children with behavioral and academic challenges, though teacher assignments for the youngest grades are still being finalized. The schools will keep music, PE and recess, and after-school programs start on day one, with the building open from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Transportation outside regular bus times remains the responsibility of families.
