Chinese researchers create full-color night-vision goggles using quantum-dot technology

A team at the Beijing Institute of Technology has built a night-vision device that renders infrared wavelengths as distinct colors instead of the usual monochrome display.

Researchers at the Beijing Institute of Technology, under the direction of Xin Tang and Ge Mu, have engineered a novel night-vision goggle that displays infrared radiation in full color. By integrating mercury-telluride colloidal quantum dots, which absorb infrared photons, with a dual-layer organic light-emitting diode, the device converts the absorbed energy into visible light across the spectrum. Stacked with precise internal wiring, the apparatus transforms incoming infrared into an ordinary-looking, multicolored image.

Conventional infrared viewers only modulate brightness, usually in green, which underutilizes the human eye’s superior hue discrimination. This breakthrough leverages that capability, providing a more intuitive representation of heat sources and expanding the utility of infrared imaging technologies.
