Chipotle removes jalapeños after Minnesota salmonella outbreak links emerge
Chipotle said it is pulling jalapeños from its supply chain after health officials linked a salmonella Javiana outbreak in Minnesota to the ingredient.
Health officials in Minnesota have documented 110 infections of salmonella Javiana, and a large share of the 84 interviewed patients said they ate at Chipotle during the period from mid-June to early July. Chipotle responded by employing its ingredient tracking system to pinpoint jalapeños from a common lot as a likely contamination point, prompting the chain to pull the peppers from all locations and restock with produce from different growers.
The restaurant chain acknowledged that the outbreak is also impacting several other food-service establishments, though it has not identified which ones. The company's stock fell nearly 8% following the announcement, erasing recent gains. This development remains ongoing as authorities continue investigations.
