Choice test crowns Aldi and Omo detergents as top performers in Australia

Consumer group Choice found Aldi Trimat Advanced Powder and two Omo powders tied for the highest scores in a lab comparison of 48 laundry detergents.

Choice subjected more than 40 supermarket laundry detergents to a controlled test, ranking Aldi Trimat Advanced Laundry Powder Concentrate alongside Omo Active Clean Powder and Omo Ultimate Powder as joint leaders with 82% overall effectiveness in front-loader cycles. The Aldi product emerged as the most economical choice, costing $10.49 for a 2 kg box, equating to 44 cents per wash, whereas Omo Ultimate priced at $36 for the same quantity, or $1.16 per wash.

The assessment, performed in an external lab, also measured performance in top-loader machines, where Aldi scored 66% and Omo Ultimate 62%. Five detergents fell below the 50% threshold, barely outperforming water. The testing protocol involved washing fabric swatches stained with a range of common soils and measuring residual reflectance with a spectrophotometer. Choice’s household expert Chris Barnes noted the results were expected, highlighting Aldi’s value proposition and Omo’s premium positioning.
