Cleveland’s upcoming WNBA franchise, set to begin play in 2028, will compete as the Cleveland Sirens, a name inspired by the alluring beings of Greek legend. The announcement came from Rock Entertainment Group during a ceremony at Rocket Arena on August 4. Fans had been guessing the team’s identity since the league awarded the expansion slot last year, and a mysterious sandcastle with the phrase “Hear The Call” surfaced on Edgewater Beach on July 31, reinforcing the mythic motif.
Sirens, traditionally depicted as winged, mermaid-like women whose songs beguile sailors, provide a dramatic branding angle for the new club. Dan Gilbert, who also owned the defunct Rockers, indicated that the former team’s legacy will be celebrated through themed nights. The Sirens name aims to give the city a fresh sports identity while nodding to its basketball past.
