Two senior Democratic strategists, Mark Penn and Rahm Emanuel, have openly criticized New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani this week. Penn argued that the mayor’s pied-à-terre tax database mistakenly includes nearly a million property owners, far exceeding the roughly 30,000 luxury homes originally cited, and warned the measure could depress real-estate values and raise constitutional concerns. Emanuel, speaking on the Unholy Podcast, said he spent about 90 minutes with Mamdani and took issue with the mayor’s past use of the slogan “from the river to the sea,” saying such language would perpetuate conflict over Israel.
Mamdani’s communications director Anna Bahr responded on X, denying that the meeting or Emanuel’s description of it occurred. Emanuel also used the occasion to criticize the Democratic Socialists of America, urging Democrats to focus on winning elections rather than ideological battles. Neither Penn, Emanuel nor Mamdani’s office provided further comment before publication.
