Coast Guard intercepts overloaded migrant boat off Southern California, one dies

Coast Guard and Customs and Border Protection agents intercepted a small craft 14 miles west of San Clemente Island, finding it packed with 21 undocumented migrants. Among the passengers, a 56-year-old man was discovered without a pulse; rescuers administered CPR and a military MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter evacuated him to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he later died despite restored circulation. The other twenty individuals were detained and handed over to U.S. Border Patrol personnel.
Officials said a good-samaritan had reported the suspected smuggling vessel. The boat's point of departure remains unknown, and the deceased's identity has not been released.
