Comet Tempel 2 Appears to Pass Close to Distant Globular Cluster M30

A telescope image taken on July 29 shows periodic comet 10P/Tempel 2 near the globular star cluster Messier 30, which lies about 28,000 light-years away.

On July 29, astronomers recorded a modern telescopic view that places periodic comet 10P/Tempel 2 close to the globular star cluster Messier 30 in the sky. The comet’s diffuse greenish coma is visible on the left side of the picture, while the dense cluster occupies the right. Historically, Charles Messier compiled his catalogue of nebulae and star clusters—objects that did not move nightly—to avoid confusing them with comets he was hunting.

In this shot, the comet’s narrow dust trail seems to intersect the cluster, though the two are separated by vast distances: the comet was about 3.5 light-minutes from Earth, whereas M30 sits roughly 28,000 light-years away. The juxtaposition highlights how faint, fuzzy objects can resemble each other in a telescope’s field of view.
