Congress leader and contractor shot dead in Udupi district, police investigate

In Padubidri, Udupi district, David D'Souza, a local Congress leader and contractor, was shot by two unknown attackers who arrived in a vehicle and opened fire. D'Souza, a former president of the Mudarangadi Village Panchayat and owner of a bar and public transport unit, was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries while being transported. Police have opened a multi-angle probe to determine whether personal or business rivalries motivated the killing.
The victim had earlier been convicted in the suicide case of Rev Fr Mahesh, an assistant priest, and had served a jail term for that offense. Investigators are examining all leads as the case unfolds.
